The Third Year of #QueerSTS4S and Call for 2018 Organizers
Mitali Thakor and Stephen Molldrem
21 August, 2017
For the third year in a row, “#QueerSTS4S: A Meetup for Scholars at the Intersection of LGBTQ Studies and STS” will convene during the 4S Annual Meeting. This year’s event will take place on Thursday, August 31st at 5:30pm at The Pour House Boston (907 Boylston Street), a very short walk from the Sheraton Boston. Thanks to the event’s sponsors, there will be food and refreshments available for those who are able to attend. RSVP here: http://tinyurl.com/QueerSTSBoston.
The past two meetups at 4S 2015 in Denver and 4S/EASST 2016 in Barcelona were very well-attended and have provided a chance for queer STS scholars to build community, share ideas, and relax a bit after a long day of conferencing. Rather than merely a get-together with colleagues, we continue to conceptualize these meetups as part of a much broader set of activities focused on building queer approaches within STS and supporting the emotional labor of individuals who are actively involved in this work.
Since the first #QueerSTS4S meetup, Queer STS scholarship has evolved and grown substantially. For example, Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience also launched at 4S 2015 in Denver. In the forthcoming issue on “Science out of Feminist Theory” co-edited by Angie Willey and Banu Subramaniam we have a short essay on Queer STS that reflects on the history of LGBTQ studies within and around STS, discusses recent developments, and suggests strategies for future theory-and-institution-building practices. Be sure to check out the special issue when it comes out!
Organizing the #QueerSTS4S meetups over the past three years has been incredibly rewarding. However, we are now actively seeking individuals who would want to take on organizing duties for the meetup at 4S 2018 in Sydney and beyond. If you are interested in doing so, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com.
We hope to see you on Thursday, August 31st at 5:30pm at The Pour House Boston (907 Boylston Street). Please RSVP here: http://tinyurl.com/QueerSTSBoston!
This year’s #QueerSTS4S meetup is generously co-sponsored by the University of Michigan’s Department of American Culture and STS Program, the 4S Council, 6S, the MIT STS Program, and the University of Toronto’s Technoscience Research Unit.
