The Department of Engineering and Society (E&S) in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor position. Academic general faculty members provide important academic service to the University community, focusing on teaching as well as research (See https://uvapolicy.virginia.edu/policy/PROV-004). Service to the department is also expected.

This position involves teaching three courses per semester as part of the Science, Technology, and Society Program in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The primary responsibility of the STS Program is to teach STS, ethics, and communication to undergraduate engineering students.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in STS or a closely related field.  Candidates with research and teaching interests in the following areas will be preferred: STS or social dimensions of engineering practice, macro and micro ethics and values; social justice aspects of technology; sustainability; cyber technologies and data; technology ethics; or ethics for engineering professionals. Also preferred are candidates with a record of teaching excellence.

This position will begin with the fall semester, in August 2023 and will involve teaching three sections of ethics or a combination of ethics and the STS 4500-4600 undergraduate thesis course. The salary will be commensurate with experience and will include fringe benefits.
